Blackfin Tuna Season

Blackfin Tuna are great followers of Spanish Sardines and other small baitfish pods, the larger the pod, the better. They sometimes even come into shallow water, but basically are fished in deep water on 30 to 40 mile trips. They may be found at about anytime, if you are willing to travel long distances, but may be found on occasion much closer when baitfish are present. We have caught them in the 50 to 60 foot water range.

Our best fishing is from April to August at about 30+ miles out. They are easily chummed, but with a huge amount of chum, or consistently chunking. We fish for them with light tackle. With heavy tackle they can pull you right out of the boat if you're not careful. They generate a tremendous force on both angler and tackle. Trolling is another way to draw a savage hit.

Tip-When trolling for Blackfin Tuna, set at least one bait 200 feet behind the boat. Since engine noise and boats on the move make them shy away, this is a great way to get a reel screaming terror on your line. One of my favorite artificial baits is a #17 Gold Bomber.
