Cobia Season

Cobia are a great eating fish. They come in out of the South and off the deep wrecks in the Spring with the big movement of the baitfish. This usually happens around the last of March or the first of April. They may be chummed and caught on inshore waters more regularly than the offshore at this time of year. Although the migration is to the North, we retain a great number of these fish on our local inshore reefs, and you will find them foraging for food on the flats also.

Many of these powerful fighting fish find homes for the Summer with us, and stay around until November or even December. When you have one on the business end of a rod and reel, you will find them a completely formidable fight. You can't sike them out or get them to give up as you can a number of other fish. They will fight you until their blood oxygen is gone.

Tip-If you see a Cobia roaming the flats, don't run up to him and cast a bait. Do as you would a Tarpon and position yourself in front of him waiting until the fish comes within casting distance. If they know you are there, they will refuse your offering. Also, watch for Stingrays roaming the flats, you may find a nice Cobia behind him ambushing the baitfish the Stingray scares off.
