Dolphin Season

Dolphin is one of the finest in table fare on the Gulf of Mexico. They are a warm water and clean water fish. The water temp must rise into the high 70s or 80s to bring this beautiful fish into our reach. The hotter and clearer the water, the colser to land you will find them. However, usually you must run about 24 miles to be in decent waters for Dolphin. We usually travel 30 miles + to find the big bulls and cows. June, July, and August seem to be the best months on the Central West Coast, although May might be good fishing too if the water is hot.

Chicken Dolphin (small Dolphin), run in Schools, and when found, there may be hundreds in a school. These fish are fun on light tackle, and send customers and crew into panic. The bulls and cows usually run in pairs, and a likely spot is under sargasm weed lines. Trolling or sight casting is usually the method of catching them. However, many are chummed to an anchored boat.

Tip- When a Chicken Dolphin is hooked, you should keep it in the water until another is hooked, and so on, and so on. Throwing handfuls of chum in two or three locations around the boat will help keep them there also. I usually stand on the bridge with a Jig on a light tackle outfit, and if they start leaving, I cast the jig ahead of them and tease them back. They are a very fast fish and can be gone in the blink of an eye, so you need to be prepared for them at all times.
