Grouper Season

Grouper is probably the most popular Florida restaurant food mainly because they are plentiful in our offshore waters, and deep water commercial fishing is able to provide the product. There are many different species of Grouper. Red, Gag, Yellowtail, Scamp, and Carboritta, are the most regularly caught fish on the Central West Coast of Florida.

Grouper can be found here year around. Seasons and water temperature place these fish in different locations, but they can be fished all year long. There are different methods of fishing them, such as drifting, bottom fishing at anchor, jigging, and trolling artificial baits on downriggers or planers. Each one has it's own set of circumstances. On our How-Too's site (to come soon), we will go into this deeper.

Tip-When fishing in shallow waters, a hook may be set by raising the rod forcefully, but in deeper waters (80ft+), trying to set a hook is only setting off an alarm for the grouper, and they usually run immediately for their rock or hole. The bow of the line in the current, the stretch of the line, and your delayed reaction give a smart old Grouper time to hang you up on the bottom. So, instead of setting the hook with the rod, reel hard until the line is too tought to reel further, then you can raise your rod and try your luck in keeping that big one from going back down.
