Tarpon season is a thrill for all of us. The captains and crews enjoy this type of hunting as much as the customers. Times vary by a week or two, but in the first part of April you can start looking for them to show up on the beaches dolphining or playfully daisychaining. Boca Grande is known as the Tarpon Capitol of the world, but I believe we have more fun and just as many fish here in West Central Florida.

Tarpon Season
Fishing with a hundred boats side by side is not my style of fishing. Catching Tarpon in shallow water is so much more fun than dragging them out of deep water to fight them. By mid to late April we usually have a lot of fish here to choose from, and the average size of Tampa Bay's Tournament winning fish seem to be a lot heavier than the southern Tournament winning fish.
The bite usually lasts until about mid July, when it becomes hard to find them, accept in some local deep holes.
Tip-When lining up for Tarpon in passes, if the Tarpon pod doesn't come to you, please don't start your engines and make a run for them. Let the other boats near them have their chance at baiting the fish. If you make a run at them, you won't get anything, but you will ruin everyone else's chance, especially if you are running outboard engines. Outboard engines scare the hell out of Tarpon, and they will scatter quickly. Wait til they have passed and make a circle to the front of them, you may get several chances at them if you use this strategy, and you will not show off your inexperience, or make a lot of other fishermen angry.
