Wahoo Season

Wahoo are usually a deeper running fish. We will usually fish them on flat lines very long, at about 150 to 200 feet behind the boat. Sometimes they are boat shy, and other times they will come right up and hit the outriggers. When they stay deep, we use the downriggers 40 to 80 feet down. We have found one of our best ways to get them to bite, is when we are trolling for Dolphin. They feed on Dolphin, and we run a red and black one ounce feather way back. When we get a Dolphin on, and stop to fight the Dolphin, we let the feather decend to about 80 feet, and then reel as fast as we can. This will bring a Wahoo hit if they are following that particular pod of dolphin.
TIP-Red and Black, also Blues and Purples seem to be good colors for Wahoo when fished long. On our short lines (Outriggers) we fish a lot of flathead feathers and Dolphin colored baits. We also sometimes add Bal-e-hoo to our long rigs, this may bring about any fish to the lure.
